Ferland Mendy underwent successful surgery on Monday in Lyon, following a severe injury sustained against RCD Espanyol. The Real Madrid left-back could only manage ten minutes on the pitch before being forced off. Medical tests confirmed a rupture of the proximal tendon of the rectus femoris in his right leg.

The procedure was performed by French specialist Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, a renowned expert in European football. Notably, the same doctor recently treated Kylian Mbappé after his knee issues, which contrasted with the initial diagnosis from Real Madrid’s medical staff. The club expressed full confidence in Mendy’s recovery plan, though the exact timeline remained unclear.

Initially, reports from COPE suggested the injury could be more severe, potentially sidelining him for up to a year. However, following surgery and further evaluations, the most likely scenario is a recovery period of four to five months. If confirmed, Mendy could return between late September and October.

It is clear that the French international will not play again this season, adding to a career marked by physical inconsistencies at Real Madrid. With one of the highest salaries in the squad and a contract until 2028, his combination of high wages, concerning injury history, and long-term deal makes a potential transfer extremely difficult.

Mendy’s numbers reflect his physical struggles. He played just 452 minutes this season, spread across five La Liga matches, three UEFA Champions League games, and one Spanish Super Cup appearance. Since the 2022/23 season, he has missed 84 matches for club and country due to various injuries.
