The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially activated Mookie Betts from the injured list in time for Monday’s four-game series opener against the San Francisco Giants. Betts has been sidelined since April 4 due to a right oblique strain, an injury he sustained during a 10-5 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Manager Dave Roberts indicated that Betts will slot into the second or third spot in the batting order. Prior to the injury, the 2018 American League MVP and four-time World Series champion posted a .179 batting average with two home runs and seven RBIs over eight games this season.
Roberts did not specify which player would be moved to make room on the roster for Betts. During his absence, Hyeseong Kim, Alex Freeland, and Santiago Espinal have shared middle infield duties, performing effectively as a platoon.
“It’s a good problem in a sense of where we’re at, but it’s a potential tough conversation,” Roberts said Sunday following the Dodgers’ series finale against the Atlanta Braves.
Betts completed a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, going 2-for-5 with a walk over two games. His return is expected to provide a significant boost to the Dodgers’ lineup as they face their division rivals.
