Paulo Bento, the former head coach of Portugal’s national team, has admitted that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo soured during their time together. The coach stated that he refused to compromise his principles, despite the tensions with the star player.
**Bento Reflects on Strained Relationship with Ronaldo**
Bento revealed that his relationship with Ronaldo deteriorated over the four years he led Portugal between 2010 and 2014. In an interview with the program “Hora Bolas” on Antena 1, the coach acknowledged that the dynamic between them changed over time. Bento suggested the tension stemmed from his refusal to compromise his own principles as a coach.

**Bento Explains Why He Would Not Give Up His Principles**
The former national team coach insisted that maintaining authority and making independent decisions were essential aspects of his role, even when dealing with high-profile players. Reflecting on his time in charge of Portugal, Bento admitted that his relationship with Ronaldo was no longer the same by the end of his tenure.
“If you asked me if the relationship was the same as at the beginning, I would say no,” he admitted. “If, to maintain a relationship, I have to give up my principles… no. It’s not about stubbornness, but conviction. Coaches are paid to make decisions. If we let others make decisions for us, we are being dishonest with those who pay us; we are paid to make decisions and we don’t do it.”
**Authority and Hierarchy at the Core of Bento’s Philosophy**
The former Portugal coach explained that while players may question decisions, there must be limits within the team structure. He noted that during his own playing career, he never confronted a coach over selection decisions.
“As a player, I never asked any coach why I wasn’t playing,” Bento added. “But that doesn’t stop them from asking me and me trying to explain. There are things that have limits, and leaders should not be afraid to establish well-defined hierarchies. Players need to know who holds the power in the locker room. From the moment they don’t know, things either end or are about to end.”
**Ronaldo Seeks First Saudi Pro League Title**
While Bento reflected on events from over a decade ago, Ronaldo continues his playing career at Al Nassr. The team currently leads the Saudi Pro League table and has a strong chance of winning the championship this season, having opened a five-point lead over second-placed Al Hilal with two matches remaining. After the season ends, Ronaldo will shift his focus to Portugal’s national team, aiming for the 2026 World Cup. Portugal is in Group K alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
