After 11 seasons at Anfield, Joe Gomez, the longest-serving current player in the Liverpool squad, may be on his way out this summer. The 28-year-old defender has spent over a decade as a reliable backup, yet his future at the club is now shrouded in uncertainty.
According to reports from The Athletic, contract renewal talks between Liverpool and Gomez have stalled. His current deal runs until 2027, but the defender himself recently admitted in an interview that his future is unclear. 
Gomez joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 and has served under three managers—Rodgers, Klopp, and Slot—without ever being promised a starting role. He has been a key squad player, often stepping in at center-back, full-back, or even defensive midfield during injury crises. Despite being overshadowed by stars like Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Ibrahima Konaté, Gomez never complained, quietly fulfilling every task assigned to him.
If no extension is agreed, Liverpool may look to sell Gomez this summer to recoup some value. This would leave the Reds with only the aging Van Dijk (34), new signing Jaké recovering from injury, and young prospect Léoni—neither of whom have proven themselves in the Premier League. The club would likely need to sign at least one new center-back to avoid a defensive crisis next season. 
Alternatively, keeping Gomez could see him become a first-choice defender in 2026-27. For 11 years, he has given his best years to Liverpool, always living in the shadow of others but never wavering. Every transfer window brought rumors of his departure, yet he stayed and delivered when needed most. Now, as contract talks stall and the word “clear-out” emerges, Gomez’s 11-year vigil may not earn him a new deal. If he leaves this summer, Liverpool would lose not just a versatile backup, but the last remaining player who witnessed the club’s highs and lows, its rebuild and triumphs. For Gomez, perhaps a move elsewhere would finally give him the starting role he deserves.
